Wal-Mart Foundation Donates $50,000 to Clark County READS to Enhance Libraries at Three Public Elementary Schools Helen Herr, Gene Ward and R. Guild Gray Elementary Schools to Receive Thousands of New Books. The Public Education Foundation’s literacy initiative, Clark County READS, has received a $50,000 donation from the Wal-Mart Foundation for its Library Enhancement program. The first three public schools receiving a portion of the Wal-Mart Foundation funding are Helen Herr Elementary School, Gene Ward Elementary School and R. Guild Gray Elementary School. Each school is receiving $9,000 to purchase new nonfiction books. Two additional schools will be selected to receive funding later in the 2008-2009 school year. Wal-Mart’s funding will allow Clark County READS to replace outdated books in the schools’ libraries with new nonfiction books. Prior to ordering books for a library, the Foundation performs an analysis of the library’s collection to determine which books will have the greatest impact on the library and its students. To recognize the donation, an hour-long celebration will be held inside the library of each of the schools on Tuesday, November 18. The first celebration takes place at 8:55 a.m. at Helen Herr Elementary School located at 6475 Eagle Creek Lane in Las Vegas. At 11 a.m., the second celebration will occur at Gene Ward Elementary School located at 1555 E. Hacienda. The final event will be held at 1 p.m. at R. Guild Gray Elementary School located at 2825 S. Torrey Pines. The Clark County READS Library Enhancement Program utilizes donations from various businesses and organizations to update resources for students in Clark County School District (CCSD) libraries. “Since Clark County READS was established in 2001, we have placed more than $1.1 million worth of new non-fiction books in 82 CCSD libraries,” said Curtis Jones, director of Clark County READS. “This translates into almost 70,000 books, benefiting almost 75,000 students,” he said. “We are very grateful for the Wal-Mart Foundation’s generosity which allows us to continue promoting the importance of literacy in Southern Nevada.” “Wal-Mart Foundation is proud to support The Public Education Foundation’s Library Enhancement program,” said Tiffany Moffatt, regional corporate affairs director for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “Supporting local programs and organizations such as this allows Wal-Mart to truly make a difference in the communities we serve.”
